PhD project
Christianspries / Friedrichsort and its topography of power. Investigating the aristocratic landscape and fortified border of a Renaissance fortress.
New technical, political and social ideas and impacts altered dramatically the European societies and landscapes during the post medieval period. In the 16th century the bastionary fortification type, as an efficient response to the European firearm evolution, was developed and introduced as a privilege of the high nobility. Attended by this development a professionalism of warfare, which influenced deeply into the common culture and society, was heralded. The primary research region of this project is located in the western coast of the Baltic Sea, which covers todays states of Denmark, Germany and Sweden, in the time frame of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. During this period the establishment and maintenance of sovereigns power was embossed and enforced by a “border aristocracy“, of Renaissance Scandinavia. My focus lies on human constructed and influenced landscapes and the valorisation of cultural landscapes of Renaissance fortifications. The development of the aristocratic landscapes during the renaissance period was highly effected by social, cultural, political and environmental transformations, for example the reformation or the Little Ice Age. A major column of current state, in European castle research, considers the medieval castles as a symbol of status, directly connected to the surrounding landscape. The same argumentation can also be adaptet to the Renaissance fortifications, which were not only strong military sites but social, political and economical hubs. Beside other, these changes were expressed and responded by the nobility, through the post medieval fortifications, like the fortress of Christianspries / Friedrichsort. In which, this military complex, createt during the 30-years war near Kiel, builds the centric point of my research project.
