PhD project
Landscape distribution of Talaiotic monuments as markers of social space.
Centred in the larger islands of the Balearic archipelago, Mallorca and Menorca, between 900 and 550 BCE, a research programme will be undertaken aiming at determining the relevant associations between the distribution of social activity and landscape. The principal source of information is the most emblematic and well defined chronologically material evidence: the “towerlike” Talaiotic monuments. These buildings are the basic structural unit of Talaiotic settlements around which the daily life of the community was developed. Viewing Talaiots as an expression of social activity it becomes relevant to quantify the work investment in their construction that these represent. This type of estimates allows for a territorial mapping of the social work associated with each structure. The intensity distribution of social activity may then be correlated with geographical and environmental variables. This research line permits to obtain a better insight into settlement pattern and demographic aspects, the identification of possible areas of high population density, and to determine the relevant association between population density and potential natural resources (soil types, marine resources, freshwater access, etc.). This information can then be used to study the social space of the Taliotic society. Furthermore, a comparative study of social activity patterns for the islands of Mallorca and Menorca will be undertaken to establish the degree of pattern homogeneity.
Research interests Prehistory of Balearic Islands, development and formation of social space, subsistence and socio-economical organization, Social Archaeology, GIS and statistics.
