PhD project	‘Imprints of Loyalty and Corporate Identity in Early Modern Landscape’ – New Index to Paolo Giovio’s and Gabriele Symeoni’s Devises, Lyon 1574 This Ph.D.-project is based on a 400 year-old book in the library of the Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel, the Dialogo dell’Imprese Militari et Amorose from Paolo Giovio and Gabriele Symeoni, edited by Guglielmo Rovillio, Lyon 1574. It is a centre piece of emblematic literature which presents individual signs of upper class-members of its time. Signs constitute identity. Internationally the so called imprese were used on an exclusive level for non-verbal communication of political intentions. The aim is to trace the evolutionary variety of each of the 139 signs mentioned in the book by an inventarisation in situ of their ornamental being on buildings for example. The locations point out landscapes of their reign, of loyalty and alliances. This Ph. D.-project intends to work up this early modern handbook about its contemporanean phenomena of imprese in the way that the relevance of this medium, subject and their examples is revealed. During this process new discoveries about the culture of early modern times will be made. Presenting the results in a tabulated catalogue will not only deliver a prosopographic register and an iconographic handbook to the Renaissance, but will also provide information about early modern mentality in its diverse facets of acquisition and utilization of knowledge, forming of identity, advertisement, publicity and pastime.
Research interests	Sociology of knowledge, object-based research under the aspects of the spatial, social and iconic turn, gender-studies, etymology, research-up in museums, trans-epochal comparison of styles, intercultural comparison of myths, proveniences, grotesque counter-aesthetic and kitsch.
