PhD project
Room Determinants and Scopes of Action. Facets of a City using the Example of the Pompeian Forum.
The aim of my dissertation project is to analyse opportunities for actions and perceptions as well as their conditionalities on the Forum of Pompeii as a result of the interaction between human and space. It means on the one hand that human being creates, builds and forms space, he constructs it and gives it a meaning. As a result of this active creation of his environment, man determines, influences, delimitates himself and in his opportunities for action. Hence the study of the Pompeian Forum is central element in my project. The question is, how and to which extent it is possible to prove potential actions and perceptions of the antique human beings based on the features respectively specific measures of architectural design. Especially structural modifications, which took place between the 2nd century BC to 79 AD, are of specific interest for this purpose and provide a basis for another important question: what are the motivations for these configurations? Are there indicates for political, economical or religious intentions? For this research it is necessary to work with features, which are characterized by their conservation and completeness, to get a gapless image of the situation. That is the reason why I chose the Forum of Pompeii as object of study since the heritage conditions of the city are still an ›auspicious occasion‹. And also the high percentage of the excavated areas as well as the state of research, which can be evaluated positively, ensures a good insight.
Research interests The interaction between human being and space; theoretical archaeology; roman architecture; indigene cultures in south Italy; roman influence in the Lebanon; history of science.
