Tracking a specialization: Fishing gears in the Lower Danube during the 5th millennium BC as an adaptive response to different environmental resources and constraints
Late Neolithic and Chalcolithic settlements from the Lower Danube have been receiving attention of archaeologists for the past 100 years, during which time researches revealed a fascinating set of data. Among these are the evidence for practicing metallurgy and the emergence of multi-stratified settlements, a novelty for the 5th millennium BC in this region. But while some aspects, like stratigraphy and relative chronology have always constituted the focus of the scholars investigating these settlements, others passed unnoticed. It is one of the main reasons why fishing did not individualize among other practices within these settlements. The investigations conducted at the site from Pietrele – M?gura Gorgana in the past 13 years yielded a significant number of artefacts that indicate the exploitation of fish in the area, such as an assemblage of fishing implements and an extensive number of remains pertaining to aquatic fauna. Starting from the fishing equipment, this research addresses the extension and implications of exploiting the aquatic resources in the 5th millennium BC in the entire Lower Danube Valley.
