Geomorphological/Environment-archaeological Analyses on the Formation of a Prehistoric Settlement Mound at Niederröblingen (Saxony-Anhalt) and its Surroundings
Geoarchaeological investigations on a so far unique multilayered settlement site at Niederröblingen (Germany) and its surroundings resulted in a reconstruction of the Holocene landscape history and man-environment-interactions in a new quality.

The chronostratigraphy of the site starting at 5300 BC (at least 15 subsequent layers, settlement continuity of about 4000 years) was established with the help of Bayesian modeling.

Palaeoecological, geochemical and physical data indicate changes in types and intensity of economic activities at the site (e.g. intensification of agriculture with first byres at the site during the mid Bronze Age). Resulting environmental changes in the surrounding landscape have been detected as well (e.g. clearing of the riparian forest and its conversion into agricultural land). Even feedback loops of this development are obvious, e.g. in the substitution of wood by loam plastered walls in architecture (since the mid Bronze Age). As a general trend increasing settlement intensity with a growing hinterland area can be inferred for the time frame spanning from the Late Neolithic until Roman Imperial times.

The results of investigations on alluvial and colluvial sediments as well as on buried soils from the surroundings of the settlement are consistent with the geoarchaeological record from the settlement site. Whereas Early Holocene erosion was found to have been induced climatically (8.2 ka event), Mid- to Late Holocene phases of slope instability were found to have been enabled by agricultural land use. The deposition of first colluvial layers during the Bronze Age coincides with the increase of economic activity reconstructed at the settlement site and therefore backs the interpretation of hinterland enlargement. The first Holocene alluvial deposit in the vicinity of the settlement was dated to the Pre-Roman Iron Age and therefore supports the idea of unintentional growth of the settlement mound (in contrast to dwelling mounds at North Sea shores). Neither during the Early Holocene nor during the Mid- to Late Holocene did Chernozemic soils develop in the research area.

This multiproxy approach, i.e. an analysis of bio and geo remains combined with geomorphological investigations in the surroundings, resulted in a holistic reconstruction of the Holocene landscape history and man-environment-interactions.
