Archaeological issues and research are brought to the public's attention through many formats. Among the most important are exhibitions and museum-based education as well as radio and television broadcasts. In the course of rapid technological development, especially in the digital sector, multimedia formats have also found their way into informal learning sites. Many museums, for instance, have developed multimedia tools (e.g. apps) to enrich or supplement their exhibitions. Evaluation of the actual didactic benefits of these formats, however, rarely takes place.
This project aims at developing a multimedia learning environment related to research in landscape and social archaeology at Kiel University. Special focus will be placed on critical approaches to historical narratives concerning archaeological sites, landscapes, finds etc.
Alongside developing and testing the multimedia learning environment, the project will study the possibilities and limitations of communicating current archaeological research content through such formats using quantitative and qualitative methods.
